Adventures for the Gloomy that also Enjoy a bit of Cockney Goodness
By Tyler Standen
Bought this for my Kindle years back because it was free. I couldn't put the thing down I liked it so much. It felt good and I liked the characters, I felt like I was reading an adventure story like I used to back in gradeschool but with a more capable writer at the helm.

Speaking of, I hesitate to call him one since I know nobody else who knows him; but Quiller-Couch seems a hidden gem of a writer. Reading his other books like 'Brother Copas' I've taken a liking to the guy. He has verbiage, but it's wrotten so that I don't mind it. As soon as I get physical copies he'll be on my shelf next to Hemingway, Croshaw, Tolstoy and friends.

Splendid
By J R Zvesper
This novel is a splendid tapestry of intersecting lives, in which, while no one is perfect, even the bad guys benefit from the author’s generous comprehension and imagination. The author’s psychological insight is not time-bound, but this novel is “historical”: it is set in the past – mainly in the 1790s, in London and Philadelphia; and it is about how real political conflicts and changes are parts of the lives of the novel's fictional characters.

During the Gordon Riots in June 1780, when Sarah Battle was twelve, her life had already been radically changed by historical events: both her mother (who had enrolled her in school) and her only real friend (Ben Newton, a young artist who truly educated her) were killed by soldiers who had mistaken them for rioters. Sarah had to abandon her schooling and go to work in her father’s coffee house. For several years, her life was damaged and diminished. “Having lost her youth with her mother and Newton, Sarah became humourless, existing on a pulse of memory.”

We eagerly watch how Sarah goes about rebuilding her life, and we can hardly wait to see whether all ends well.

This book was published in the United Kingdom a few months before it was available in the United States, and several good reviews of the book have appeared on the UK amazon website.

Fast-moving mystery and historical fiction
By Gerald Dubs
In Rising Sun Descending, author Wade Fowler weaves together a secret mission from World War Two, a haunting love story, a mysterious death and the furtive plans of a modern-day militia. Deftly moving from plot to plot, Fowler develops parallel love stories that are tied to mysteries past and present. I especially enjoyed the interplay between the historical story and the modern characters and I was happy to see that the protagonists will return for another story. (My only complaint was that my wife grabbed the book before I did and so I had to wait - not long - for her to finish reading it. Thanks for a good read.

From Publishers Weekly
With his legendary humor and delightful wit, Reiner gives new life to this classic Twain tale. The multiple Emmy Award winner and recent Television Hall of Fame inductee beautifully shifts between several accents, dialects and moods, letting listeners commiserate with the author's young protagonist, Tom Canty. Raised in a raucous family of beggars and thieves, Tom dreams and reads of princely life to escape his miserable 16th-century London existence. After wandering to Westminster and meeting benevolent Prince Edward Tudor (who bears an uncanny resemblance to the ragamuffin Tom), the pair exchange clothes and unwittingly identities. Reiner's vocal performance of this heartwarming story is sure to keep the entire family entranced. Listeners will be pleased that this volume is only one of several in a Mark Twain series read by Reiner.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7-Mark Twain's classic fantasy comes to life in this outstanding reading and interpretation by British actor Kenneth Jay. Using his voice like an instrument, Jay creates unique voices for each of the characters. Providing additional background to this wonderful British accented voice is a number of excellent selections of classical music from composers such as Purcell, MacDowell, Wagner, and Tomkins. The opening short piece of Baroque music that sounds as if it heralds the entry of royalty sets the mood for this story of two boys who exchange places during Henry VIII's reign. Students who might never consider opening Twain's book will sit enthralled at Jay's reading, and they just might decide to read the book. This audiobook will be useful in both literature and history classes, and will even be enjoyed by adults borrowing audiobooks from public library collections. Few audiobooks are as good as the text version, but this one is a pleasure to sit back and enjoy.

Review
“Twain was . . . enough of a genius to build his morality into his books, with humor and wit and—in the case of The Prince and the Pauper—wonderful plotting.”—E. L. Doctorow

A wonderful classic for intelligent and imaginative kids.
By Margaret Fiore
This story has been a favorite of mine since I first read it as a child. I have re-read it many, many times, most recently to two of my children (who also enjoyed it), and it continues to be rich and engaging. Since the language is true to the era of the story, however, it may put some readers off. Others will find that the archaic language enhances the tale.
A beggar (Tom Canty) and a prince (Edward Tudor), who look so alike as to be twins, meet and swap clothes for a lark. But an accident of judgment stretches the lark into an adventure, and the adventure into a nightmarish struggle of life and death, honor and dishonor.
Hasn't everyone wished to be royalty at some point in their lives? And especially if you were the poorest of the poor, like Tom Canty, wouldn't it be your dearest wish as a child? This is a great and yet fearful adventure, superbly detailed and believable. It was carefully written in such a manner that genuine history leaves it possible. One of Twain's best ever.

Good story told well
By Buckeyedobe
This is our second Weiss recording. I prefer it to the Three Musketeers because (1) his voices are amazing (he acts them out much more in this story than in the other), (2) I like this story better, and (3) Weiss is much smoother in telling this story than he was in the other. I noticed a few places in the other where his wording seemed awkward or where he seemed to hesitate or stumble over the words. This one, on the other hand, was FLUID and beautifully done. Very highly recommended.

Perfect Stepping Stone to Chapter Books
By Houston Book Lover
My daughter is in 1st grade and started reading during the summer before kindergarten (so she has been reading for about 1 1/2 years). However, she has had difficulty making the transition from easy readers to chapter books. Many picture books seem too easy. Yet most of the chapter books intimidate her with the pages of words without pictures. The Level 2 Usborne Readers perfectly fill this gap. The books contain familiar, even classic, tales in a chapter book format. The books challenge young readers in that they are about 60 pages in length ("The Prince and the Pauper" is 63 pages). However, EVERY page contains a colorful image! This is a departure from most chapter books -- and one that keeps my daughter engaged. Also, all of the hardback Usborne Level 2 and 3 readers that I've ordered have come with an integrated ribbon bookmark. That is very convenient. The colors are bright. Their size makes them easy to hold and carry. Try them. You will love them for your child!

Spies in the Downton Abbey Era
By @CrimeQueen2
This war thriller was published in the U. S. in 1918 (the English edition was published in 1919 under the title Mr Lessingham Goes Home). Since the Armistice was not declared until November 1918, we can deduce that Oppenheim wrote the novel while Britain was still embroiled in World War I. Germany was using the zeppelins of the title to bomb London, but as the book opens one of these dirigibles crashes in the English countryside.

Its passenger, Baron Maderstrom, finds refuge in an English country house. He brings Lady Cranston news of her brother, a prisoner of war in Germany whose release he promises to secure. On the point of denouncing him as a spy, Lady Cranston is persuaded to harbor the Baron by her brother's fiance, Helen Fairclough, and to pass him off as an English houseguest going under the name of Hamar Lessingham.

These three main characters are soon joined on stage by Phillipa Cranston's husband. Once a devoted spouse, Sir Richard Cranston is now regarded by his wife as a slacker who is not doing his part in the war effort. The heroine's ability to simultaneously despise her unpatriotic husband while concealing a German spy from the authorities who are searching for him is only one of many implausible plot contrivances the reader must swallow. Some of Oppenheim's thrillers are quite readable depictions of espionage activities, but The Zeppelin's Passenger is simply incredible. The last section of the book, should the reader persevere, jumps the shark even further.

As always with Oppenheim's novels, the writing is literate, and the male characters are boldly drawn. The women are not so deftly sketched--something Oppenheim had in common with other male authors of the time. The plot is so contrived that there is a certain pleasure in seeing what weird twists the author can devise. The price is right, so if you want to dip into a trifle from the Downton Abbey period, why not try it?

Not his best
By Mysann
I enjoy Oppenheim's novels for their espionage elements and period flair. I derived some pleasure from this one but it is not a favorite. I don't object to the fantastical story line as most of his books have that. My problem was in wanting to slap the so-called heroine. The author often makes his women too bizarre but Phillipa is beyond belief. Henry would be better off without the stupid ditz! Still it was free :)

Sappy World War 1 Romance
By drkhimxz
Oppenheim was a big name in his day although I do not remember his reputation surviving to his death in the mid-1940's. At any rate, I cannot remember having read him when I was a young avid mystery reader.
Presumably, with suitable modification, this could have been made into an acceptable silent film with a female co-star who could play a beautiful but dumb role. In brief, a German spy drops onto a British estate from a zeppelin, with news of the captured brother of the heroine and sweetheart of the chief supporting female. He had been a friend at University of the prisoner and brought word that he was receiving good treatment which would continue if they helped him in his mission. Overjoyed both females agreed to harbor him since, after all, there was nothing of military value in the area. From this fantastic beginning it is all downhill, made acceptable in our hypothetical movie, only because we would know that the familiar star would never 'really' do wrong. In the book, there is no such mitigating circumstance.
I found the story almost unreadable, not because of poor writing, but due to the silly plot and primitive female characterizations. from about one-third of the book I skimmed to the end.

At the turn of the century in England the Wynne family, like so many others, are paying little attention to the shadows cast by the coming war.

George Wynne’s father wants him to follow him into the Church, but George, inspired by a brief encounter with a mysterious sailor, is determined to join the British navy.

On his first trip overseas George begins to notice the growing international tension whilst staying with his German cousin, Werner.

The young men meet their American cousin, Claire, and the rivalry between England and Germany becomes personal as George competes with Werner for his new love’s affections.

As England’s pastoral serenity is shattered by the tragic climax of the First World War, so George and Werner finally face each other at the Battle of Jutland, here described in masterly and gripping narrative.

Will the family ever be the same again?

Or will Jutland and World War One tear the bonds that held them together?

The Grey Seas of Jutland is a classic naval adventure that will keep readers gripped to the last page.

Little about World War I
By Always Reading
Little of this book centers on World War I. It is the story of George Wynne growing up in England. His rector father expects him to follow him in to the church, but after a chance encounter with a sailor, George sets his heart on a naval career.
When he visits his German cousin Werner, he is shocked to realize many regard the British with hostility. The English are the best and greatest people in the world. They rule the waves and a good portion of the globe. He’s convinced the British automatically deserve the world’s love, and the Germans must just be jealous.
The boys’ growing up is marked by sexual awareness. There’s George’s sister’s friend Clemency, the lust he feels for a maid, feelings he believes are love for an American girl, Claire, he at first despised. George is shocked when Werner pays for a romp with a barmaid.
George desperately wants to marry Claire, but she’s not committed to him. He learns she and Werner have been having an affair. Werner has also been writing to his sister, June.
Eventually Claire marries someone else. He blames Werner for stealing Claire from him. He becomes commander of a destroyer, and knows that Werner serves on an older German battleship. George’s burning desire is to attack that battleship and kill Werner.
The two ships meet in a night engagement. Can they ever be friends again?
I expected The Grey Seas of Jutland to be primarily about WWI, and I didn’t care much for the dissipation of them all. The Battle of Jutland does comes alive quite vividly.

Very Good Story
By Thomas Urbain
First I feel the need to disclose that I know the author and work for the same company as he. I don’t know if this would have been a book I would have purchased otherwise since I am more of a Steven King / Fantasy reader. But, as soon as I saw Robert had this published I rushed to the Kindle store to purchase it.

With all of that being said, I truly enjoyed this story. I felt it was very well written, kept me entertained and I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next. Yes, there were some things that I felt were obvious, but there were other times when I was surprised by the outcome. This novel kept me wanting to know more so much that I finished it in just 2 days.

My only criticism would be that I didn’t feel there was enough character development besides for the main character Caitlin. I would have liked to have know the other characters, who they were, what motivated them , etc.

Robert, congratulations on your first novel, I’m looking forward to reading more from you in the future.
