Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War And Its Aftermath, by randy miller, sharon miller

Deadly Waters is a work of historical fiction based on true events that tells how the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs perverted Congressional Law to cheat 229,000 Vietnam Blue Water Navy Sailors out of all possible compensation for Agent Orange caused illnesses. It is a book every patriotic American who has ever welcomed home someone in uniform by saying, “Thank you for your service,” should read.
This is a story of love, war, and the promise America made and broke to those sailors she sent to fight on the toxic waters of South East Asia. It’s told through the eyes of seventeen year old Zachariah Martin, who in the fall of 1964, leaves his family farm in rural Vermont to enlist in the Navy. After boot camp he is stationed on a destroyer which is quickly deployed to Vietnam. He and his ship are heavily involved in close coastal and river warfare. Martin grows into a skilled deck seaman, gunner, and helmsman. He manages to survive the constant dangers of the Viet Cong, and an unforgiving sea.
In spite of prolonged separations, his love for his hometown girl, Tally Goodwin, survives, and grows as well. After his discharge it blossoms into a strong and loving marriage. Side by side Zack and Tally face the many obstacles and hardships life throws in their path, including diseases caused by his exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange in Vietnam.
When they least expect it, they find themselves embroiled in the toughest fight of their lives with an organization they were counting on for medical help; an organization they, like most Americans, believed to be a friend to all who served their country with honor, but turned out to be a true and terrible enemy far more cold-hearted and callous then Zack or any of his 229,000 brothers had ever encountered before: the Veterans Administration.

From Kirkus Reviews
A Vietnam veteran struggles with his health as a victim of the U.S. government's defoliation program in this debut novel.

In 1964, Zack Martin from rural Vermont enlists in the Navy and is assigned to the destroyer U.S.S. Hawke DD 894, which is predictably deployed to Vietnam. In addition to the perils of war, Zack contends with stark culture shock and the pain of being separated from his high school sweetheart. Despite sundry temptations, he remains true to her, and her steadfast devotion to him helps him survive: "I love you, Tally," he writes to her while overseas, "your love is the only thing keeping me going, keeping me sane here." He finally returns home and marries Tally, who's become a nurse. He soon discovers a recurrence of fatty lumps on his arms, which he'd had removed while in the Navy. He goes to a Veterans Administration hospital to have them biopsied and receives the grim news that he has soft-tissue sarcoma, a slow-growing form of cancer. From the beginning, Miller portrays Zack's experience with the VA, and the U.S. government in general, as frustrating and sometimes-hostile. For example, the VA claims it has no records that Zack was originally treated while on duty, which liberates it from any obligation to treat him for free. Also, it becomes increasingly obvious that his condition is the result of exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant the U.S. military developed to destroy enemy crops. In real life, extraordinary numbers of Vietnam veterans developed serious health issues upon their return-so many that the government's position that exposure was harmless eventually became untenable. As heartbreaking as Zack's struggle with cancer is, Miller's portrayal of the government's indifference to his condition is the bleakest aspect of his tale. The author deftly transforms his thorough historical scholarship on the Vietnam conflict into a gripping drama. Despite the gloomy details of the story, readers will be buoyed by the love story between Zack and Tally, which, in many ways, is an improbable union from the start due to their different backgrounds. Overall, this book offers exactly what good historical fiction should provide: enthralling drama, believable characters, and scrupulous research.

A powerful fictional account of the Agent Orange debacle.

About the Author
Randy Miller knows this story well. He did four tours in Vietnam: two on destroyers and two on cruisers. He was in the Deck and Navigational Divisions and was on one of the first ship’s assigned to “OPERATION MARKET TIME.” He has also helped many “BLUE WATER VIETNAM VETERANS” navigate the treacherous waters of the VA with their claims. He currently resides in one of Florida’s old timey, backwater towns with his wife, Shari.

Truth from someone who was there.
By David Black
As a "tin can sailor" from the 90's I was glad to read about those who went before me. Interesting to see how the rivalry between jarheads and squids was present back in the day. Should be required reading for any pre-boot recruit. Sad to hear the government knows about hazardous chemicals like agent orange and uses it anyways, then denies treatment to those who have served. Some of those in the chain of command at the VA, have done more harm to military personnel than some of our enemies in war. This book is a great read/education for anyone who is interested in Naval History.

The Deadly Waters would make a great motion picture
By Arlene
Never read anything about the Navy in the early stages of the Vietnam war. Totally loves the story and learned how difficult is was to be a sailor on a destroyer. This book reminded me of the kind of information I received from reading the Bill O Riellys Killing series. So much was never made public or just didn't want the public to know the truths about the scenereos surrounding many things in history. The Deadly Waters would make a great motion picture. I hope other people feel the same .

In 19th-century northern Scotland, Mac McDonnell's traditional way of life is challenged when Lord Gordon lays claim to their island home and threatens to replace farmers and fishermen with sheep. Mac leads a protest, but when evictions turn violent, Mac must decide what he is willing to risk - to protect his family, his sweetheart, Deidre, and his livelihood. Set during the time of the Clearances, Standing Stones won an award for historical fiction and was dubbed "a very promising work" by the Pacific Northwest Writers Association.

Sweeping, epic, moving and brilliant historical fiction
By Carol Kean
Standing Stones is a terrible story. Historical fiction helps us see how people lived in long ago, faraway places, but Beth Camp's brilliantly drawn images trick me into feeling they're memories of places I've actually visited but couldn't have, because they no longer exist. Her characters are so authentic, I can hardly believe she made them up. This is terrible, because I love them too much; their pain becomes my pain. My husband doesn't get it. It's not "just a book," because real people have suffered exactly the sort of oppression and injustice that Mac, all the McDonnells and their neighbors suffer in Standing Stones.

A young woman with blistered hands pushes a wheelbarrow full of fish across the sand in the opening scene. We smell the dried cod and feel the damp, salty breeze. Moira and her youngest brother, Jamie, do the drudge work while Mac, Dougall and Colin take to the sea, coming home with fish and stories of peril. Shipwrecks, storms and death are just a way of life; their father is a casualty of the sea, their mother too has died. Mac holds the family and a whole community together, commanding loyalty and obedience, earning love and respect from all who know him. With spare and poetic prose, Camp introduces each character and sets the scene. Along the beach, fishermen's shanties line the cove. High on a promontory, the laird's house overlooks the town and the sea. The sixth Earl of Selkirk has died, and the new laird arrives by boat with his wife and servant. Moira's tall, strong brothers wade into the water to carry the newcomers to shore. Sweaty and gritty and hard at work, Moira can't shake the image of the lady in a gray traveling suit, wearing a veiled hat and holding a pink handkerchief to her nose. Nor can we.

Lady Alice turns out to be a much more sympathetic character than expected, but Lord Gordon imposes "improvements" and demands higher rents of the working poor, thinking only of his own profits. Foulksey Island may be a fictional place, but the brutal Clearances of 19th Scotland are not. This dark period of history concerns a country so small, a people so few in number, it wasn't even mentioned in my high school and college textbooks. It's one thing to hear that a rising population put pressure on land and jobs, the Agricultural and Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and early 19th century brought change to Europe, and aristocratic landowners imposed Clearances, expelling people from their ancestral homes to make way for more profitable sheep farming. A textbook account of the large-scale forced migration to North America, Australia and New Zealand doesn't cost us any sleep at night. Novelists like Beth Camp, however, get us deeply involved in the personal lives of the displaced people of history.

I wanted this book to close at a happy time, with Moira meeting Dylan at a dance, Dougall and Cat falling in love, Mac wooing Deirdre, Lady Alice taking an interest in young Jamie's education, and Colin joining the men at sea. No such luck. Lord Gordon expels old Granny Connor from her home and burns it to the ground. Other homes are evacuated and burned. Mac leads a protest, which turns violent, and he is arrested. By novel's end, everyone is separated from one another, but hope is in sight. A sequel, Years of Stone, is coming out soon. After that, Rivers of Stone will follow the McDonnells to their new home in the Pacific Northwest. Like the real-life people who inspired this epic saga, the McDonnells and their loved ones are survivors, regardless of the injustice and hardships they face. We know they're capable of transforming themselves and their world, and we're counting on Beth Camp to deliver the news of their triumph, no matter how many books it takes to get there.

P.S.
Standing Stones caused me to search online for more information. The aftermath of the Clearances was profound and far-reaching. Before the Clearances, most Highland families lived in townships of perhaps a hundred or so people. Homes made of clay and wattle, or thickly cut turf. Roofs were thatched in heather, broom, bracken, straw or rushes. Forcibly abandoned and burned, these structures quickly reverted to nature. Not just the people disappeared. The settlement pattern, the homes of the people for a thousand years or more, were erased, and few are the remnants. Occasional stone-built houses for the shepherds may stand today, but they too are now abandoned.

The lack of legal protection for tenants reminds me how much we Americans take for granted. Scotland's government not only did nothing for the people; they funded roads and bridges to assist the new sheep-based agriculture and trade.

The settlement pattern, the homes of the people for a thousand years or more, has virtually vanished from Scotland's landscape today. Even the sheep, which replaced the people, are mostly gone. The irony? Those sheep were supposed to be an economic miracle, providing meat for the growing cities of the south and wool to the factories, but by the last quarter of the 19th century, sheep were undercut by imports from Australia and New Zealand. The people who were cleared from Scotland provided cheaper goods, often at higher quality, than those of the landowners who'd displaced them.

The standing stones of the title are real, testaments to the inventiveness and skill of a long-ago Neolithic people. We know far less about them than we do about the evicted fishermen and crofters, but who knows, maybe Beth Camp--or an author equal to her--will bring them to life in a new historical novel.

Excellent read
By Sally A. Griffith
I can hardly wait until the next book in this series is available. The author's descriptions of the personalities and thoughts of the characters made me feel as though I know each of them. The book contains a believable series of events that occurred during the time period. The upheaval of the Scots from their homes and jobs is so clearly defined. However, at the end we discover that a brand new adventure for each of the characters that leaves the reader hopeful and eager to follow these brave, strong people into the next book.

Like being able to travel through time
By Chris L.K.
In “Standing Stones”, author Beth Camp got every just right. She actually takes the reader to that time and place, where you feel the cold and the ache that the characters feel, where you smell the things they smell and taste the things they taste. For the price of a book, I feel as if I got to not only travel around the world, but I did it in a time machine! Not only that, Beth tells the moving story of the McDonnell family with such skill that I feel as if I have met each and every one of them.

Caring as much about the main characters as I did meant this saga was sometimes painful to read. Yet I couldn't put it down. Set in Scotland during the mid-1800’s, Moira and her brothers are only one family affected by the new Lord, whose mission is pretty much to run off all of the locals so that he can raise sheep on the land where they have lived for hundreds of years. It's hard to imagine that other human beings could inflict such physical and emotional pain on others.

I cannot wait to read the next in her series, “Years of Stone”. I need to know what happens to everyone of the McDonnells.

Sex. Drugs. Violence. Speaking in tongues. Set in the sweltering summer months in Fresno, California, María seeks purpose, identity and some semblance of family among the gritty underground niches of society. Not content with who she is, or where she came from, María delves into various groups yearning for fulfillment in a dystopian landscape, one very real for anyone acquainted with the underbelly of cities like Fresno. Not satisfied with drugs and sex, María undergoes a spiritual conversion after meeting evangelists from a Pentecostal church. At last she is at home, with The Family, her new spiritual family, which offers more than her biological familia—so María thinks. In the end, her newfound life is not what it seems, and María at last finds happiness and contentment in a place she previously scorned. Throughout the book María is tormented between memories of her Abuela and her journey to find peace.

“A Dante-esque novel set in modern day Fresno, that is smart as fuck without being pretentious. The Fresno of Patrick Fontes’s María’s Purgatorio is not for the faint of heart: On the surface, the city is a multi-layered purgatory and inferno of lost souls who writhe in heat and despair with their eyes sewn shut, unable to acknowledge or have empathy for their suffering, or the suffering of others. Some find solace in cruelty, others in drugs, or in the opiate of religion, or completely retreating from the world. María must climb out of Fresno’s hell-worlds in order to discover self-reliance and community within her family and heritage. A smart and pungent first novel, the reader sweats and cringes with the narrative of Fresno’s abyss; however, finds within it things and people who are beautiful and worth remembering.” Nicole Henares, poet, educator.

“María is as disturbing an evangelist as she is a slut in the pit of numb-minded America. Fontes’ MARÍA’S PURGATORIO for its detailed world building and horrific underbelly of truths about Central California’s obvious dark clash between sinner and sin. . . As for inspiration . . . I’m in love with literature and writing again.” Nicholas Belardes, author of Gaspar, and St. Augustine the Starfighter.

“The titular María walks a knife edge between virtue and sin in a generation born to a fallen reality. A distractingly attractive young Latina punk rocker, she also navigates a world gone from William Saroyan’s wholesome farm town to a Blade Runner-like dystopian sprawl when nobody was looking. A brass tacks literary portrayal of young adulthood in the summer heat of Fresno, California post millennium.” Joe Donohoe, publisher of Speciousspecies Magazine

Patrick Fontes grew up in a working class home in Fresno, California. During the Mexican Revolution Patrick’s great-grandfather, Jesús Luna, a Yaqui, immigrated from Chihuahua to Central California. In 1920 Jesús built a Chihuahua-style adobe house in Fresno. Nearly one hundred years later it is still the center of Patrick’s cherished Chicano identity. Other influences include 1980s punk, Mexican folk Catholicism, photography, Latin (the ancient language), and 19th century Russian literature. Currently Patrick is a Ph.D.C. in history at Stanford University. His research involves Mexico-U.S.A. transnational history, Latin American religion, and the Criminalization of Chicano culture. Patrick’s poetry has appeared in The Más Tequila Review, the Acentos Review, The James Franco Review, Silver Birch Press, as well the online poetry site La Bloga.

Last Exit to Fresno
By Joe Donohoe
I'm not an unbiased source. I have a pull quote on the back. That said Maria's Purgatorio is not a flawless book. MP doesn't have the seamless, arid perfect anglophone prose of a JG Ballard or Paul Bowles. There is not the clinical perception of psychopathology to be encountered in Burroughs. Nor do you have the visionary, but clearly articulated, intensity of the sort of Latin American literature that explores similar man-made hell cities from the perspective of the Spanish diaspora (think Garcia Marquez and Roberto Bolano). All the same this tome is heads and shoulders over the celebrated MFA crap that pollutes the to read list of the New York Times and New Yorker reviewers. Maria's Purgatorio doesn't indulge in the sort of post modern verbal onanism that hides a lack of substance. Nor is it a book designed for mere entertainment. Edgy and unpolished, like early hip hop or punk rock, Maria's Purgatorio deals with the rawly emotional, the viscerally authentic, with people living at the bottom of society, whose hearts and souls have weathered years of portrayal and who, generally, are not given the means to speak for themselves. The very troubled city of Fresno, California, where rural parochialism is married to urban vice in year round terrible weather (murdering summer heat, despairing winter fog) becomes as real in Fontes' prose as Faulkner's Yoknapatawpa County, Steinbeck's Monterey and Huber Selby Jr.'s Brooklyn. This book deals with the big themes: death, poverty, racism, religion, urban malaise, violence and the redemption of family from a Mexican American perspective informed by punk rock. Highly recommended and hoping for more.

Ave Maria Fantasia, loved this book!
By Amazon Customer
There is beauty to be found in this book about life in a rough and tumble neighborhood of Fresno. The author does an exquisite job of describing the strange spiritual journey of a woman very much rooted in the physical realm. I found myself rooting for Maria and becoming intimately invested in her search for peace of mind and spirit.
I couldn't give up on Maria Fantasia.

Alcinia is Back!
By David W Keeney
2nd novel by this new author. I read it in 3 sittings, couldn't stop! Adventure/romance saga, starts where "The Bard" (Book 1) ended.
Young Renaissance-era woman, driven from home by war, resettles in Turin, Italy. Now married to a noble, (she's gorgeous . . aren't they all?!) Alcinia & her husband's political/secret society adventures continue. As does their romance! Bedore paints arresting scenes in the struggles of this unstable time; City-States, the Medicis, armies & individuals all jockeying for power. Issues large & small weave through each other; equally intriguing, powerful & dangerous.

Back to Renaissance, Italy
By jtbeckmann79
Just like The Bard, I was captivated by the first chapter. The intrigue of The Betrayal kept me yearning for more ... who was the inside man? How will this impact Turin, Lord William and Lady Alcinia? And the reappearance of the ghost from Alcinia's past was just an added layer of mystery. Again, I lost myself in Renaissance Italy and I look forward to the third novel in this trilogy.

Bedore is Back!
By Richard Polad
Another fine book from Bedore that wonderfully captures the feel of Renaissance Italy. She picks up where she left off with the Bard and again tells a story filled with intrigue, suspense, and romance. Can't wait for the next effort from this author!

Magic And Mayhem - Tree Of Knowledge, by Gillian Duce

Not the same old, dull, over told story of young witches and their life. The story of a teenage witch, Boh Pierce as he slowly becomes an adult in a world where an evil of great magnitude is growing. 'Human' tales of all other beings lose credit and the basis of all good in any being is seen in their actions rather than their appearance. The M & M series follow his transformation from awkward, comical teen to competent, young adult witch, while he and others protect the world from threats.

Boh Pierce is like any other fifteen year old at the beginning of last century. He and his close friends believe that vampires and werewolves are not only real but also evil. It is a challenge, then, to his way of thinking to find out that there is more to the hidden world then spoken of in ‘human' stories. He is not only a witch, but his uncle a werewolf. This is the story of Boh as he stumbles with six other young apprentice witches to find their way in the hidden world of the other races that inhabit the earth. The truth of witches being the protectors of all races, clans and beings. The underworld which humanity is kept naïve of; with exception of a few.

Boh's class is sent on their first mission to protect the migration of the low-land elves as they make their way to their summer lodgings in the east. They are made aware of Boron, son of the dwarf monarchy, King Nevin, and his pursuit of the throne of the low-land dwarves. Boh and his class are caught up in the battle which leads to the end of a two hundred year old war.
