Welcome to the saga of the Tudors to which you don’t know the end.

In our history an English princess was born in 1492 and died three years later. This alternate history novel imagines what would happen if instead she lived. Our story begins when Elizabeth, the daughter of Henry VII and sister of the future Henry VIII, comes of age to be married. Her father has a prestigious foreign match in mind with one of the ruling houses of the Holy Roman Empire as part of an ambitious dynastic plan. But Elizabeth knows nothing of the murderous conspiracy at work in the negotiations, and has no idea of the dangers in store for her once she leaves home. Making the journey with her is a delegation that includes such future luminaries of the Tudor court as Anne Boleyn and Charles Brandon. But with so many around her pursuing their own agendas, in order to survive Elizabeth must look for help from sources she could never have imagined growing up in the safety of the palaces of Tudor England, including Ellen, a displaced African woman. In this teeming epic, by turns violent, harrowing and funny, the past with which we are familiar falls away in a bare-knuckle struggle for power and revenge that will ultimately re-shape the world.

An alternative history, realistic and engaging. Characters you love or hate (sometimes both), and just the right number of twists and turns to keep you keenly interested without requiring that you take notes to keep track. Equal parts history, drama, and suspense. I look forward to the next in the series!

This magical novel about urban mixed-blood Indian life has as its narrator-protagonist, Albert (Alley) Hummingbird, a self-conscious, overweight, shy college student who hides his feelings with humor, and who longs to reconcile the two cultures that have formed him.

  • Published on: 2016-01-05
  • Released on: 2016-01-05
  • Format: Kindle eBook

From Publishers Weekly
Albert (Alley) Hummingbird, the shy hero of this imaginative and entertaining first novel, is a mixed-blood Indian who must contend with a father who abandoned Nez Perce ways to marry a rather daft white woman, with an uncle haunted by the ghosts of pilots he sent to their deaths during WW II and with Death itself, which is treated as a character. To save newborn Alley from the grim reaper, his grandfather, the source of his Native American values, "took a disappointed Death by the wrist, put Him in the passenger seat of the 1947 Plymouth" and drove to a far-off mission, "where he left Him chained like a rabid dog." The boy will encounter Death again in pet burials and his sister's secret retreats to the graveyard. The opposite sex also causes much heartache for Alley, who feels the need to make everything right for every woman he knows. Skipping lyrically between his hero's childhood and young adulthood, Penn has produced a delightful work of magic realism reminiscent of John Nichols's The Milagro Beanfield War . Flashbacks abound, and the reader is never quite sure whether Alley's wise grandfather is alive or merely living in his imagination. Himself of Native American and white ancestry, the author limns with insight the struggles of modern, urban, often mixed-blood Indians to forge a coherent identity.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Penn's first novel has all the usual pain-inducing ingredients identifiable with any Bildungsroman. These are mixed together well with elements of Native American myth, a beautifully evoked Southwestern landscape, and humor. Memorable characters like wise girlfriend Sara, an even wiser Grandfather, and, surprisingly enough, Death, accompany Albert "Alley" Hummingbird on his journey through young adulthood. In the process, Penn poignantly reveals the difficult personal politics of identity facing this young man of Native American and WASP descent. Just recently awarded the 1994 North American Indian Prose Award by the University of Nebraska Press, Penn certainly promises to reach a wide audience with this novel. Recommended especially for collections emphasizing Native American literature.
- Faye A. Chadwell, Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Columbia
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
A Bildungsroman filtered through Native American sensibilities serves as Penn's first novel as he follows his young hero from Hopiland to L.A.--all on a search for love, self, and understanding, complicated by a fragmented family beset by tragedy. Alley Hummingbird, with white and Indian blood in his veins, has a special bond with his Nez Perce grandfather, who labeled him a survivor at birth when the medical establishment thought him dead, and whom he hears through the ether in California when he isn't visiting the Hopi Second Mesa where the old man lives. Alley's stern, taciturn father and loquacious mother--who talks intimately to strangers and toasters--make him rebellious, uncertain, and eager to find refuge elsewhere. In the company of William the Black, like himself a fish out of water in white suburbia, he dabbles in sex and selling liquor to minors, until William's middle-class aspirations are threatened and he leaves Alley in the lurch. With the Vietnam War underway, Alley enters an exclusive college and joins ROTC out of a desperate need to belong, only to find women shunning him. Sara Baites, a professor's artistic daughter, shows greater tolerance, but just as their fumbling romance is finally going smoothly, Alley learns that his blinding headaches are caused by a brain tumor, and that the prognosis for his survival after surgery is only 50/50. Death has been a shifty, strung-out presence from the outset, but with help from his family and Sara, Alley recovers--only to find Death waiting at the foot of grandfather's bed. A tender, compelling coming-of-age saga, with youthful alienation and family pride represented in a delicate, often uproarious combination. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. No Absence of Heart
By grace saran
This is a wonderful story. Calling all film makers -- especially native ones -- this would make a hell of a screenplay. But readers and writers will love the book. The tone of the story is superb, the author writes of painful things without selfconsciousness and explores the experience of growing up a mixed blood Indian in ways that make it real for any audience. The characters are memorable, the story of the love between Alley and Sara will touch your heart and the descriptions are poetic. Wise Grandfather will make you laugh. Get to know that special place known as "The Absence of Angels" -- you won't regret it. Penn is an award winning author also, whose other novel (Killing Time With Strangers) won the American Book Award and is also a must-read.

By Richard D. Cook
have, as a friend of mine, who isn't said, "Have some garlic in your blood and disposition of a drunkin sailor" then don't even go here.
I happen to have all the qualifications, which made a wonderfully delightful and easy read for me. If the book hadn't been written the year I was born, I'd sworn that Mr. Penn had written it about me. Pickled with the straight forward, sometimes dry, other times laughingly surprising, Old Grandfather thoughts and conversations, this book has many lessons to teach, even non-Natives about the focuses one should consider, when facing everyday life challenges. Yes, a very good read!

Painful, tedious, ideology-ridden nonsense.
By M. MacConnell
I couldn't finish it. I really tried, as I like to keep an objective mind about topics on which I know little, but reading this was an exercise in masochism. Avoid at all costs, particularly if you have an affinity for the subject.

"'Kiss me, Oakes,' murmured the (dying) Rear-Admiral"
By T. Patrick Killough
On any thinking man's short list of great male bonding novels there has to stand THE TWO ADMIRALS: A TALE OF THE SEA.

It plays out mainly on land in or at sea near Devon during the exciting British summer of 1745, though not written and published until 1842. You will not be wrong it you read THE TWO ADMIRALS for its young romance, clouded ancestries, its political intrigue and intricacies of ship building and seamanship, naval warfare, tactics and strategy -- all served up complete with the attitudes and superstitions of seaman and their leaders. But you would miss the forest for the trees if you did not see that this is the story of the warm love that two heroic men bear down the decades one for the other.

Both men, Richard Bluewater and Gervaise Oakes, would have been born into wealth in England around 1690. Fresh from school at ages 12 or 13, they entered the lowermost rung of the Royal Navy, not long after independent Scotland and England had been -- on paper at least -- submerged in a new country, The United Kingdom. From their first meeting until death parted them after a great jointly won sea victory over the French in 1745, the two friends were inseparable, though of notably different physiques, temperaments and, over time, political loyalties.

As young officers their sea colleagues styled them Pylades and Orestes. As they rose steadily through the ranks they became "the Twin Admirals." In youth the two lifelong bachelors had both loved the same woman, who, long dead, now casts her shadow between them in 1745. Possibly because he ardently supports the imported German House that succeeded the native Stuart monarchs, Vice Admiral Sir Gervaise Oakes now outranks Rear Admiral Richard Bluewater (or "Blue" as his men affenctionately style him). For in the court of King George II, Bluewater, although discreetly silent, is suspected, rightly, of wishing the Stuarts back on the throne of the U. K.

In July 1745 the Young Pretender, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, landed in Scotland and soon raised many highland clans in support of the claims of his father, the Old Pretender, James Edward, son of deposed King James II. Not many days later a fleet of 16 British warships led by the two admirals had dropped anchors in an obscure port on the southern coast of Devon. Its leader, Vice Admiral Sir Gervaise Oakes, in possession of intelligence that the French might soon attempt some mischief in Scotland, had anticipated orders and sailed back from six months patrolling the Bay of Biscay.

Almost immediately word comes that Bonnie Prince Charlie is afoot in Scotland, and a beautiful decades long friendship is sorely strained. Rear Admiral Bluewater refuses to accept an honor offered by George II, the Knighthood of the Garter. Only from England's legitimate King, James Edward, could he accept such preferment. Indeed, the junior admiral is all for resigning his commission and racing north to join Bonnie Prince Charles!

Meanwhile Vice Admiral Oakes with half his ships sails out just before a serious storm to confront a superior French fleet. He trusts that his friend Richard's brain will prevail over his political emotions and will fight the French even if the wrong king is on the throne in London. But a wily Jacobite supporter of the Stuarts persuades Admiral Blue that the French are sailing to prevent King George II's son from returning from warring in the continent, and bringing German mercenaries with him to fight the Stuart rising. Blue feels that the coming civil war should involve only Britons. Hence he is tempted not to follow orders at a critical time in the battle, unless his friend Gervaise's ships should bite off more than they can chew -- as they do.

At the last possible moment, Blue throws his ship between his apparently doomed friend and the French flagship. In person, muttering about wiping out personal dishonor, Blue leads boarders onto the French vessel and captures it. He is then mortally wounded by a spiteful throwaway shot from a French marine, whose life he then saves from irate British sailors. Carried back to shore and the cliffs of Devon, the Rear Admiral lingers near death for days. Meanwhile, contrary to law and custom, and never again repeated in British maritime history, the flags of both admirals fly over Bluewater's ship, the Caesar.

On land, the dying hero takes leave of friends, of a just discovered niece whom he causes to be wed beside his deathbed, of the captains of the fleet and, finally, of his oldest and dearest friend, Sir Gervaise Oakes. Over days they had reminisced together over early amours and careers. Galleygo, the Vice Admiral's steward, who has known and loved both admirals since they were boys, retells to the dying Bluewater details of their last joint victory over the French.

The personal religion of both heroes had been shaped by the direct impact of God on them made visible in the power and majesty of the sea. Neither was a great churchman or inclined to spend time puzzling over dogmas. Both accepted, however, Sir Gervaise's view: "'Friends must meet again, hereafter, Bluewater; it is irrational to suppose that they who have loved each other so well in this state of being, are to be forever separated in the other." The Vice Admiral then "turned aside and wept." The dying man made one last request of his old friend: "'Kiss me, Oakes,' murmured the Rear-Admiral" (Ch. 30) And Gervaise bestowed a kiss on his friend's cheek.

The next and final chapter of THE TWO ADMIRALS takes place in Westminster Abbey in London. Octogenarian Admiral Oakes, long retired and his mind and memory nearly gone, is led by a young protege and by the faithful steward Galleygo, both of whom had participated in the great sea victory of 1745, to the tomb of Rear Admiral Bluewater. Other players from the summer of Bonnie Prince Charlie, by coincidence, are also present. Along with the feeble old Admiral, all fell on their knees to pray. The old man's heart then stopped. "He had lived his time, and supplied an instance of the insufficiency of worldly success to complete the destiny of man ... (Ch. 31).

There is much more to this grand tale than a simple retelling of David and Jonathan, of Pylades and Orestes and of Richard and Gervaise. But this dimension: the thoroughly masculine love of the twin admirals, may be more than enough to persuade you to read THE TWO ADMIRALS: A TALE OF THE SEA.

Great reading for sailors
By Scribbler
True to writing of this period, The Two Admirals describes people and places in excruciating detail. If you can wade through that, there is plenty of action and quality drama. If you're one who loves sailing in all its purity, the detail in describing ships and sailing will have you smelling the sea, hearing the wind in the rigging, and building calluses as you hoist sail. As in all of Cooper's writing, you'll also gain a new and true perspective on the history of the time.

I recommend all the books by Altsheler. War and wilderness are his fortay. Brush aside the flowery writing...that was pretty much the norm when those books written. Majority of books are free. Good story..BUT!!! READ in order the series were writtten so you can follow the heros.

A fun fictional account of a factual event
By Phil
A fun fictional account of a factual event. Because it is written in the post Victorian period the conversations between the characters have a bit of an overly "respectful" and less familiar tone to them. Other than that, it is a nice read and good for those looking for WW1 literature other than Hemingway or Trumbo styled heroism.

Levantado del suelo / Raised from the Ground (Contemporanea) (Spanish Edition), by José Saramago

Jonathon Goode, Honorary Witch: The Crystals of Aztlan, by Michael Lingaard

Synopsis:
Twelve thousand years ago, the fabled island of Aztlan, in a cataclysmic event, disappeared beneath the sea, taking with it all the island’s mysteries, which were lost forever. Or were they?

Bloodlines lived on, passed on through Aztlan’s survivors. These bloodlines included powerful priests and priestesses, who controlled almost mythical powers through the magic of Greater and Lesser crystals.

In modern day England, 16-year-old Jonathon Goode and his cousin, Elizabeth Waterhouse, are told by a fairground fortune teller that they will meet an elf in an emporium where magic is bought and sold. It comes to pass.

The elf gives Jonathon an Everywhere Key, opening a doorway to a realm between realities. Three Muses of magic in the realm are convinced that Elizabeth is the heir to an ancient bloodline of Priestesses, and believe she has the power to control a Lesser crystal.

They were wrong. Elizabeth does have a magic power, but it is the power of a biomorph. Elizabeth is a shape-shifter.

It is Jonathon who has the true power.

The Muses tell a tale of a crystal that is no longer lost and is being use for evil. They want Jonathan and Elizabeth to find it and return it to them. But the crystal is in another reality, one they can access through the Everywhere Key. They end up in the land of Thallos, where the survivors of Aztlan fled when their island home was submerged. But Thallos is also the home of Great Worms, dwarves, trolls, and magicians.

Fantasy at Its Finest
By Charles Asher
With a blend of C.S. Lewis and the more fanciful side of Tolkien, author Michael Lingaard delivers an epic, spellbinding, and thoroughly modern fantasy with his novel Jonathon Goode: Honorary Witch— The Crystals of Aztlan. While reminiscent of canonical classics of the genre, Mr. Lingaard’s work is by no means derivative; rather, it is a perfect coalescence of beloved fantasy elements woven together in such a way as to feel both comforting— almost nostalgic— and entirely new. Age-old tropes are explored in a fresh light, lending a contemporary perspective to mythic archetypes and the perennial coming-of-age story.
Set in modern-day England, the intricate book leaps across space and time, taking our young heroes— Jonathon and Elizabeth— from a chance encounter with a fortune teller to the mystic land of Aztlan 12,000 years in the past. Elizabeth, it seems, is the heiress of an ancient, holy bloodline, while Jonathon discovers that he possesses world-altering powers. As these two youths journey farther into alternate universes and forgotten ages, they are called upon by three muses to undertake a quest of the utmost importance— and of the utmost danger.
Mr. Lingaard has managed, with only the first book in his series, to craft a comprehensive mythology and cosmological landscape worthy of the finest fantasy writers. His characterization eschews any of the woodenness so often found in the genre, presenting instead thoroughly fleshed-out and active protagonists whose narrative— and personal— journeys captivate the reader at every turn. Jonathon Goode: Honorary Witch— The Crystals of Aztlan proves a compelling read and a true gem of contemporary fantasy, fulfilling the desires of the avid fan, while too offering bold and unique inventions and inversions that are sure to delight.

Good fantasy
By jia_biswas
I have always been drawn towards the Magical fiction Genre, whether it is by J.K. Rowling or J.R.R Tolkien, I have loved all of them. Reading Jonathon Goode: Honorary Witch, the Crystal of Aztlan (boy that’s a big name) by Michael Lingaard was like re-living the days of Childhood when I 1st read my Harry Potter book, yet the story is something totally new and was a lovely read.
The author has done a splendid job of creating an amazing fantasy world. I loved reading the part of Jonathon and Lizzie, they are both new to this magical thing yet they get hold of it pretty quickly, doing their part very efficiently. The story is spaced between past and present and using magic Jonathon and Lizzie travel space and time. They take upon an important task, that has a lot of danger in it, but with help from the past they go ahead with their task and on the way finds their true power. Whether they can complete their task or not, for that you should read the book, I won’t spoil the fun.
While I loved reading the part of the book that featured Jonathon and Lizzie, I really did not enjoy reading the parts with the other characters, like Sir Percival. It is not that those characters are not interesting or necessary, they are a major part of the story. But the way it was written, I was not able to get a grip on the situation, to be true I did not understand what it was trying to say most of the times. I know that this is a fantasy genre and I am truly impressed with the story, but sometimes I got lost among all the words the author used to describe something or a situation. Maybe a second time reading will give me a better conception of the idea.
This book is the 1st book of a 3 book series, so I will surely be looking forward to the next book.

Magical journey...
By Rajalakshmi Prithviraj
The first thing that caught my eye was the title of this book. Men and boys were supposed to be wizards right? How could Jonathan Goode, a boy be an honorary witch?

The plot is really interesting. Its about a boy and his transformations. The story line shifts between realms of reality and fantasy. And, the transition is so subtle and smooth that the story narration remains unaffected. sometimes, strange things happen when they are least expected and the plot simply reflects this statement. This book takes you on a magical journey.

The narration is fast paced and can keep you engrossed till the end. The writing takes a reader into a world of unicorns, elves, dwarves and centaurs. On the whole, a perfect treat for visualisations. Michael has used a language that is appropriate for children to read this book as well. Hence this book has a universal appeal.

The characters are apt and have a role to play in the story line. They exhibit emotions that any person in their shoes would feel. The protagonist Jonathon is a perfect replica of a young boy who is nervous, curious and courageous.

To sum up, I loved the imageries that this book presented. A book that can be read by the young and old alike. This book promises a sequel.

P.S- Thank you Kim of SBPRA for an interesting book in exchange of an honest review...
