A Vintage Shorts Travel Selection

The Nobel Prize–winning novelist Orhan Pamuk reminisces on growing up on the banks of the mysterious Bosphorus in Istanbul.

From the ghostly yalis, splendid waterside mansions built by the great Ottoman families during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to the crowds of vessels—Russian frigates, rickety fishing boats, and ferries—that plied its waters, Pamuk takes readers on a tour of the great river. A selection from the shimmering and evocative Istanbul: Memories and the City, “Along the Bosphorus” is the essential guide to the city’s watery way.

Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse, by James Wesley Rawles

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city. As hordes of refugees and looters pour out of the cities, a small group of friends living in the Midwest desperately try to make their way to a safe-haven ranch in northern Idaho. The journey requires all their skill and training since communication, commerce, transportation and law enforcement have all disappeared. Once at the ranch, the group fends off vicious attacks from outsiders and then looks to join other groups that are trying to restore true Constitutional law to the country. Patriots is a thrilling narrative depicting fictional characters using authentic survivalist techniques to endure the collapse of American civilization. Listening to this compelling, fast-paced novel could one day mean the difference between life and death.

Militia-Style Survivalist Manual in a Fiction Format
By Kyle Pratt
Patriots is a TEOWAWKI , militia-style survivalist novel packed with information. While Patriots does mention stockpiling food and the use of non-hybrid seeds this is not a book about self-sufficiency. The premise of the novel is that an economic depression spirals out of control. The economy completely collapses, money becomes worthless, the mail stops, the power grid and phone system shuts down and the government at all levels disappears. In the story this period is understatedly called the Crunch, but no depression in the history of the United States has been nearly so severe. Even church services appear to stop for several years.

With the United States in turmoil and collapse, the United Nations and at least some international banks have survived. Together they become the catalyst behind a provisional federal government that seeks to exert near dictatorial control over America. Frankly, I believe there is much more strength in the institutions of the United States than there ever was in the United Nations and so this plot scenario strained believability for me. However, when asked, James Rawles stated, "I made the scenario in the novel a near `worst case' in order to make it more interesting reading, and as an opportunity to show the need for planning and preparedness in a variety of areas..."

Using the Crunch as a literary device Rawles packs the novel with data about guns, medicine, fuels, equipment and tactics. The book has been described in several online reviews as a "survival manual fairly neatly dressed as fiction." Indeed it is much more entertaining than reading the facts in a reference book or manual. But this is also the greatest weakness. It is hard to pack facts into a novel without the author intruding into the story. Much of this story is told in the form of narration, as opposed to showing within the flow of the events. Characterization is weak. Both author intrusion and narration weaken the literary quality of the story but add to the amount of information Rawles packs into the book

Recommendation: The information is five-star, the literary quality is two star. Buy Patriots for the "survival manual," not the fiction story.

Couldn't Put it Down!
By A Customer
Excellent work by Mr. Rawles. In it he explores the possibilities and what ifs of a total collapse of the civilized world that we have come to know and upon which we depend. Imagine, if you will, that the economy spins out of control and takes civilized society with it. Imagine this event making the Great Depression look like a walk in the park. How would one survive or thrive during such a chaotic experience? Can it be done alone? What are the real problems and issues that might need to be overcome? Mr. Rawles novel explores those possibilites. His information is well presented. Obviously a lot of thought and research went into this novel. It reads more like a contingency plan and less like some escapist fantasy. It beats any sci-fi novel hands down. I strongly recommend "Patriots" to anyone who's ever wondered what would happen should the day come when they dialed 911 and nobody answered.(Remember Hurricane Andrew and the LA Riots?) Read "Patriots" and find out. It is definitely time well spent. However, let me offer a word of warning. Pick up "Patriots" and you won't want to put it down until its finished!

**UPDATED** Fire the editor!
By Michael E. Parrott
This has to be one of the worst edited books I have ever seen. You can tell it was written in the 1990s and updated recently; they mention the election of Barack Obama. But they did a lousy job of updating the text. The time lines, ages and historic events are screwed up. For example on page 22, it says that Todd and Mary found the ranch on vacation trips to Idaho in 2001 (happily married at the time). On the same page it states the idea for a group retreat was formed in 2006, while Todd and T.K. were in college. Later, it says that Todd started working from home in 2008, using a PC with a 20 gig hard drive and a dial-up modem. Dial-up in 2008? Especially for a corporate sanctioned telecommuter? That may have been the standard in 1988! On page 35, Kevin graduates college in 2007 and starts as a junior programmer. Next paragraph Kevin is starting SECOND career as freelance programmer in 2002. I guess he started his freelance in high school? Also, Doug states his age as 22, but he was born a year after his parent got married, soon after his fathers return from Vietnam. Let's see...The Crunch hits in 2009, so that means Doug was born in 1987, that means his father got home from Vietnam around 1986 or so. Delayed demobilization? POW release? These are just a few of the examples of bad editing and updating.

Come on, the use of a simple whiteboard with a timeline drawn on it and used to update the text would have made this a much more enjoyable read. Any decent editor should have caught these errors and had them corrected before sending it to the printers.

Plus, as another reviewer stated, recent college grads paying cash in the hundred thousand dollar range for ranches in Idaho is a bit ridiculous.

The story was pretty interesting and informative but the bad editing ruined it for me. I could not get past the glaring inconsistencies. F--

----- Jan 28th 2013 -----

The above review was written in 2009 based on the Fourth Edition (Expanded) available at the time. I have since re-read the book in the Revised edition published late 2012. it was like reading two different books. The time line inconsistencies are gone. Everything falls into place nicely and fits with the updated (IE: current events) content.

Now the book works as a great fictional story (but scarily close to reality it seems) and as a preppers guide. I will probably read it again, this time with a highlighter to mark important products and ideas.

Thank You Mr. Rawles for the new edition. Much more enjoyable read this time around.

The Prince of Beverly Hills, by Stuart Woods

Rick Barron, a sharp, capable detective on the Beverly Hills force, finds himself demoted after a run-in with a superior officer, but he soon lands a job other cops only dream about: the security detail for Centurion Pictures, one of the hottest studios in the midst of Hollywood's golden age of the late 1930s.

As the protector of the studio's interests, Barron looks after the elite of filmdom's stars - among them Clete Barrow, a British leading man with a penchant for parties, and Glenna Gleason, a peach of a talent on the verge of stardom. Rick's easy charm has society columnists dubbing him "the Prince of Beverly Hills", the white knight of movie stars, until he stumbles across a murder cover-up and a blackmail scam that threaten the studio's business and may have origins with some unsavory characters.

When two suspicious deaths begin to look like a double murder and an attempt is made on someone who has become an intimate friend, Barron knows he is up against wise guys whose stakes are nothing less than do or die. A dicey war of nerves is on.

An interesting departure for Woods
By Eileen
When police detective Rick Barron sees film star Clete Barrow crash his car in a highway accident, he efficiently whisks the drunken actor away from the scene and wards off bad publicity for Centurion Pictures and their famous British star. In return, he is hired into the coveted position of the head of security for the film studio. When he probes into the mysterious death of his predecessor and the beatings of several actresses, his investigations lead to a murder cover-up and blackmail. He soon runs up against a cast of shady characters that threaten his own safety.

In a departure from his Stone Barrington novels, Woods has produced a fast-paced and entertaining story of intrigue and organized crime against the backdrop of Hollywood in its heyday. This setting provides ample opportunity for Woods to mix a bit of history and glamour into the story. As the United States hovers on the brink of the Second World War, it touches the lives of the story's characters. Rick Barron meets Bugsy Siegel, Clark Gable, and Greta Garbo. He is dubbed "Prince of Beverly Hills" by Hedda Hopper. He listens to the big band sounds of Artie Shaw. Rick is an interesting and likable character, and it seems likely that this is the start of a new series. Recommended as a fun and fast read.

Almost There
By Patrick W. Kelley
If you have read my past reviews you know I think it is pretty worthless to actually talk about the story, but to actually talk about the enjoyment factor of reading fiction. I mean you don't read fiction as a means of actually furthering your education or anything. You read it because it is fun and enjoyable. You lose yourself it the book as a 3rd party observer and go for a literary ride for a while. Well this ride was fun for about 3/4 of the book. After that if feels like your are on a descent roller coaster of fiction going along with the story and then 3/4 of the way through the book Stuart Woods kind of hops the track and takes you on a path that has absolutely nothing to do with the previous 250 pages. I actually liked the beginning and middle and should have stopped there and then made up my own ending and I would have given it 3 stars. Don't waste your time or money on this one...or do if you want to chuckle at what a silly ending the books has. I really can't say enough at how it seems Stuart Woods just really got tired of writing this book and then just farmed out the ending to someone that hadn't actually read the first 3/4 of the book.

Interesting novel set in Hollywood in late 1930's !!
By Jerry Bull
The prolific Woods' previous 28 novels span both non-series mysteries and thrillers as well as his rather well known Will Lee (lawyer/politician), Stone Barrington (playboy private eye) and Holly Barker (Orchid Beach police chief) series stories. "Prince" is a total departure, featuring ex-cop, now Centurion film studios new head of security, Rick Barron, in a tale set in 1939. The movie studios are becoming big business in the heyday of Gable, Garbo, and Hopper; but war troubles loom in Europe as the Nazi machine is gearing up for conquest.

Rick gets his job through handling big star Clete Barrow's auto accident, in which he squirrels the actor away before bad publicity sets in, to the ever grateful appreciation of the studio. Soon he has plenty of money, a glamorous convertible, and increasing pull with the top executives of the studio. Before long, he himself is an assistant producer and apparently latches on to the work quickly as he is successful right from the start. His careful covering of a rising female star's attempted suicide also endears him both to his bosses and to the lovely lady herself, and soon romance ensues! All is swell but for the interference of mob thug Chick Stampano who keeps rearing his ugly head, as part of a blackmailing scheme, throughout virtually the whole book. In the end, who will prevail?

The plot meanders to a somewhat slow ending, but this novel is not exactly a thriller with a big hunt or whodunit that needs a flashy ending. Rather, it is more of a period piece that entertains with historical perspective, an amusing story set amid the glory of the movie capital, and characters with whom it is fun to spend an afternoon or so enjoying their tribulations and victories. Woods' writing is as always in fine form, and frankly we didn't miss the explicit sex so common in his Barrington tales. All in all, the new characters and early Americana (albeit Hollywood!) gave us a pleasurable few hours of light reading without overwhelming violence, sex, or intrigue. Enjoy!

flying from the UK to Australia in 14 days and 22 hours was an amazing, record-breaking feat
By Read Yourself to Sleep
I was excited to read this historical biography, so to speak, of the late aviatrix Jean Batten, mostly because I know shockingly little about the history of aviation. The evolution of transportation never fails to blow my mind. Less than a hundred years ago, flying from the UK to Australia in 14 days and 22 hours was an amazing, record-breaking feat. Today, you can make the same journey in less than a day. Outstanding, is it not? A few decades of technological development, and suddenly we have the world at our fingertips.

I had no idea that so many women were involved in aviation so early on. Usually when we think of female aviators, our minds go straight to Amelia Earhart, so it was nice to learn about the accomplishments of Jean Batten and her contemporaries.

The prose here is quite lovely, and as far as I can tell by browsing a few online articles, most of the details of Jean’s life provided in this novel are true. Ms. Kidman definitely knows how to weave an interesting, colorful narrative while remaining true to the facts.

It pains me to deduct two stars, but I feel that I must. The majority of the book was comprised of summaries of all the things that happened in Jean’s life, with only an occasional smattering of dialogue in between. There are only a handful of full conversations included–those were my favorite parts. Even though I’m glad to have read this book and learned all I did, the way the story was written kept me several feet from the characters, never allowing me to emotionally connect with any of them. Even Jean, as brilliant and accomplished as she was, eluded my heart. If this had been presented as a nonfiction book, this writing style wouldn’t have put me off at all, but as it is marketed as a novel, I expected a little more interaction with the characters.

Overall, The Infinite Air is a good read. I would recommend to those interested in aviation, transportation, and women’s history.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Infinite Air by Fiona Kidman
By Penny Jensen
Jean Batten is a true kiwi heroine and not enough has ever been made of her feats. This story should be made into a movie. She deserves to be remembered for all she achieved for aviation and for women. Fionna tells her story so well. I love all the books based on NZ history that Fionna has written.

A Great Tribute to Jean Batten!
By Lauralee
Jean Batten is one of the world’s greatest aviators. She is the first woman to fly solo across from England to New Zealand and also broke many records during her solo flights. However, while she is a famous icon, she has a mysterious life. In this historical novel, Mrs. Kidman tells a more intimate story of Jean Batten’s personal life. This book details Jean Batten’s accomplishments as well as her personal losses.

Before reading this book, I did not know anything about Jean Batten’s life. This novel gives Jean a very humanizing portrait of this fascinating woman. Jean is a woman who is a big dreamer, and she is determined to make her dream come true. She is very ambitious, persistent, and courageous. She is a woman who has a commanding presence because she is very confident. Yet, Jean has also experienced many sadness in her life. While it seems that she is a woman who has everything that she has ever dreamed of, there are glimpses of where she is unhappy. She is very sad and lonely. This makes her seem cold and distant. Thus, Jean is a complex figure, and readers are drawn to her personal struggles as well as her triumphs.

Overall, this book is an in-depth psyche to one of the world’s most iconic female aviators. This book is about love, family, loss, and dreams. It is also about a woman trying to find happiness. This book is filled with fascinating characters, and I loved Jean’s relationship with her mother. Jean’s mother, Nellie, was very supportive of Jean and always stood by her side. I found their relationship to be very touching. This book is very well-written, and I felt like I was there beside Jean. The Infinite Air is a great tribute to Jean Batten and her accomplishments.
(Note: I read an ARC copy of this book in courtesy of Netgalley.)

One Little Word: A Mary Fisher Novel (Green Flourish Book 7), by T. A. Peters

1896: Upon leaving the town of Loggerhead behind them, Mary and Abigail continue on their journey home to Greenhaven only to be delayed when they allow themselves to be led by a lost child into the Florida wilderness where a hidden church, which only allows guests entry by special invitation, claims to be home to a ministering angel. At first, Mary wants to press forward with their travel plans, only when she discovers that an acquaintance is donating huge sums of money just for the chance of bearing witness to a divine miracle, she decides to pay up and remain to observe so as to draw her own conclusions. After observing a case of supernatural healing, Mary comes to discover that the angel’s keeper is far from the heaven-born saint that he claims to be, and when the man attempts to unleash his own brand of hell on earth, Mary finds herself faced with an evil that can only be felled by One Little Word... Tortured by her own conscience when temptation calls, driven by her own lust for vengeance when a friend is murdered, and led of an elusive, ethereal spirit to right the wrongs perpetrated against the innocent, Mary must follow her own heart in order to navigate through the dark waters that threaten to inundate the hidden village of Bela, where traditional values have been twisted into something horrific that only she has the force of will to untangle. With the help of Abigail and her friends, Mary cautiously advances through a series of shifting alliances during which she will discover who she can afford to trust, and who she must be willing to kill.

Review
"One Little Word by T.A. Peters is a fascinating tale set in nineteenth century Florida... This is a masterful piece of storytelling, related by an author with extraordinary depth and sensitivity... Mr. Peters has crafted a work of art. His characters come alive in every facet of their development..." -Readers' Favorite

"This winning novel draws its power from the author's skillful prose, mastery of dialect, embrace of the rich diversity of 19th-century America, and the skill with which he weaves together the supernatural with deplorably mundane corruption and brutal exploitation. Peters's grim tale transcends the limitations of genre series and is sure to delight readers." -The Booklife Prize in Fiction

About the Author
T. A. Peters was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and has lived in Florida for over twenty years. The author’s interests in classical literature, language, dialect, philosophy, theology and local history resulted in the writing of the Green Flourish series of books including the novels Loggerhead and One Little Word, featuring the diffident, atypical heroine Mary Fisher, and the prequel Green Flourish Pentalogy which presents an intimate portrait of Mary’s ascendance as a character from her conception to maturity in five volumes.

One Little Word is a many layered and beautifully written work of art.
By Kindle Customer
One Little Word is the seventh novel in the Mary Fisher series by T. A. Peters. One Little Word is full of moral challenges from beginning to end. After leaving Loggerhead, Mary continues in her role as "Mr. Fisher". She and her partner Abigail stumble across the hidden town of Bela while trying to return Ellie, a lost little girl, to her home. Mary soon discovers Bela abounds in mystery, danger, and unbelievable evils.
The varied responses of characters in this novel to their individual moral challenges brings each character to life. Some overcome, some rationalize their involvement in this evil town, some turn a blind eye to the evil actions of others and some unfortunately embrace the evils in Bela. The emotional tug of war dialogue between the so called "healing angel" Alexandria and Mary is unforgettable. I felt Mary's pain along with her.
Action abounds in One Little Word. The author's ability to bring complex characters alive is remarkable. As with the first six novels in this series, One Little Word is a many layered and beautifully written work of art. It deserves more than five stars in my opinion!

I Love Mary Fisher- You Will Too.
By Harold T. Swartz
How do writers break through and become best sellers? T.A. Peters writing skills are prodigious. He creates mary Fisher, a homely, if not ugly, giant lesbian and makes you her biggest fan. Never mind that she kills folks from time to time and displays human weaknesses such as temptation, her sixth sense warns of danger, recognizes lies and from time to time displays healing powers. The Scotch dialogue is infectious. By the time I read my second Mary Fisher story, the language was part of the joy of reading. One Little Word is an adventure pitting Mary and her lover, Abigail, against a religious cult driven by a monster-minister who fathers a whole colony of children, only to sell off his daughters. Peters' prose is riveting. I only had intervals to read the book. I couldn't wait to resume my reading for each session. In a world of true opportunity for non-celebrity authors, this man would be a star. Don't miss this extraordinary tale.

A weak link in a strong series
By Paper or Kindle
The 19th book (of 32) in the Miss Silver cozy mysteries, written from 1928 to 1961, has the usual plot devices that the author is noted for: a large country house, lots of people, a victim no one will mourn, and lots of motives for the throng, all of whom are suspects. There are a couple of pairs of young lovers in a mix-up over who gets paired with whom, and each pair has obstacles to surmount on the way to Happy Ever After. Unfortunately, one weakness in this book is the "heroine". I put that in quotes because she's not just a spineless jellyfish, she's the next best thing to developmentally disabled. She has a drifting mind, childlike emotions, a total lack of education or reason, and why anyone would want her, let alone three very different types of men, is beyond me. She doesn't need a husband, she needs a halfway house with supervision. Other reviewers have noted Miss Silver's perpetual cough. She is the retired governess who is now an expert private enquiry agent and has been successfully solving crimes for decades, in between knitting an endless succession of socks, vests, jumpers and knickers. Her cough is one of her defining features, and yes, it's extremely irritating. I've been reading this series in order (though each book stands alone perfectly well) and that cough is driving me crazy. I keep wishing she kept a packet of Ricola drops in her knitting bag. But, as someone else noted, she uses that cough as shorthand for emotions otherwise not expressed. Another weak aspect of this story is the ultimate culprit. Usually, the culprit is well depicted along with every other suspect; in this case, he appears to be nearly an afterthought. Miss Silver, though keenly intelligent, is portrayed as nearly omniscient, since the author makes the point that she never even meets some of the suspects. This entry in the series is rather disappointing, yet it's still readable. It was written in 1951 so you can expect the type of language, morals and technology of that era. The CSI team hadn't even been born then!

Another Miss Silver winner.
By Shirley Schwartz
This is another winner for Miss Silver. It's a classic as well since Miss Silver has to pay a visit to a large country estate to determine who murdered the owner with his own antique ivory dagger. It seems like a straightforward case. The man's fiance is found by the body with blood on her hands and dress, but she claims she was sleepwalking, and there is really no motive for her to kill her fiance. This is a case where no one including the reader likes the murder victim. He was a rude, grasping man who made lots of enemies. But the reader doesn't really like the young fiance who is suspected of killing him either. She is a weak-willed girl that can't stand on her own two feet. One just wants her to get on with it instead of being a victim. But the other characters are good. Young Bill, Lila's previous fiance is a nice clean-cut young man, and Lila's friend Ray is also very likeable. The mystery of who killed the master though needs to be solved, and Miss Silver does that with her usual aplomb.

A suitable weapon
By Damaskcat
A collector of ivory is found stabbed in his study appropriately enough with a dagger from his collection. It is soon clear that most of the people present in the house at the time have a reason to wish him dead - from his future mother-in-law to his future reluctant bride, Lila. Miss Maud Silver is called in by Lady Dryden - the future mother -in-law. It is soon clear to here that most of the residents of Sir Herbert Withall's country house - Vineyards - have secrets they really do not want to reveal to the police.

Frank Abbot is sent to investigate the case as he is now an Inspector having been promoted from Sergeant but he has a hard time convincing his boss that the obvious person is not always the perpetrator. This is an excellent example of Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver crime stories with Miss Silver's very human qualities much to the fore. The characters are well drawn - from the dislikeable corpse to the two young women, Lila and her cousin Ray.

If you haven't yet tried Patricia Wentworth's books then you could do worse than start with this one. They do not need to be read in order and each stands alone. If you like your crime stories from the Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers mould then these books are for you.

The Valley of Decision - A Novel, by Edith Wharton, John Charles Lewis Sparkes

This antiquarian book contains Edith Wharton's first serious novel, "The Valley of Decision". Within this text Wharton juxtaposes characters inspired by the anti-religious writings of Voltaire and Rousseau with the orthodox leaders of the day. As in many of Wharton's writings, it becomes evident that violation of societal conventions comes at a great personal cost. This seminal piece of literature would make for a worthy addition to any bookshelf, and is a must-have for fans and collectors of Wharton's work. Edith Wharton (1862 – 1937) was an American novelist and short story writer who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature numerous times. The chapters of this book include: "The Old Order", "The New Light", "The Choice", and "The Reward". Wharton was famous for combing her inside view of America's upper classes with her fabulous wit to construct amusing novels and short stories of social and psychological exploration - and we are proud to republish this vintage classic. It comes in an affordable, modern edition, complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Edith Wharton (1862-1937), American novelist and short-story writer, was born in New York City. When her husband became mentally ill, she cared for him until 1913, when she settled permanently in France and divorced him. Slow but Worthwhile
By Ken
I found The Valley of Decision a slow read. The pace might have arisen from my expectation that I would get to know the central character, Odo; and that my interests would rise and fall with his fortunes. I conclude, though, that, in writing this book, Edith Wharton had in mind more abstract considerations than the personality of the central character.

The Valley Decision, for much of its text, seems to pit religion against liberty and progress. Odo develops progressive ideas, but, when he attempts to place them in operation, the human condition (including prejudice, inertia, and ignorance) blocks him at every turn. Religion, at least in the form of Christianity, earns a better name by the end of the book.

I rate this a slow but worthwhile read.

Everything old (18th Century) is new again...
By Carl Ian Schwartz
There is a later novel by this title set in 19th-20th Century America by Marcia Davenport--made into a film at MGM in 1945. However, this novel is about an Italian man coming of age in the late 18th Century and becoming the duke of the small northern state where he was born. The language is often difficult--calling for visits to a dictionary--but the content is surprisingly up-to-date, even for these times.
It's an early novel by Wharton, published in 1902, and will stay with the literate reader--well worth the investment in time!

Rich Tapestry of Historic Italy
By Dave_42
"The Valley of Decision" is Edith Wharton's first long novel, being published in 1902 after her two collections of shorter works, "The Greater Inclination" and "Crucial Instances", and the novella "The Touchstone". It is an impressive work, and Wharton's writing is outstanding as usual. The scope and detail are there, but the execution is not quite up to the level which she would later attain.

"The story takes place in the later part of the 18th century Italy, and focuses on the life of Odo Valsecca, a man who rises to power over the course of the four books which make up the novel. Odo has to deal with the powers in the form of the nobility, the church, the free-thinking movement, and of course the peasants. Wharton effectively details each of these forces, and creates interesting characters from each to form a novel of incredible richness and depth, but so much time is spent on explaining the period and politics that the development of the characters and the storyline suffer.

Book I is titled "The Old Order" and covers Odo's youth. Here we learn about the impact which St. Francis Assisi has on his early years, about the poverty in which he was raised in spite of his noble bloodline, and of course the impact his father's death has on his mother and of course on himself. It is also during this period that Odo meets two friends he will have for the rest of his life, a hunchback which he knows as Brutus, though he later learns his real name is Carlo Gamba, and Vittorio Alfieri, a Count from Asti.

Book II is titled "The New Light" and it picks up the story when Odo is a bit older. He has become a young noble, and is learning the ways of the world. He meets free-thinkers, and in particular Professor Orazio Vivaldi and his daughter Fulvia for whom Odo falls in love. Odo's naiveté with regards to court intrigue and the spying which occurs nearly destroys the Professor and his daughter not just once, but twice. Odo goes to live with the Duke of Pianura, the title for which he is in line and for which it is becoming more and more likely for him to inherit. There he falls in with the free-thinkers again, and once again the spies are on to him. Thanks to the Duchess he manages to escape when de Crucis arrives having been commissioned by the Holy Office to look into the free-thinkers. Despite being on opposite sides of the free-thinker issue, Odo comes to like de Crucis.

Book III is titled "The Choice", and during this period Odo is free to travel and learn from the free-thinkers thanks to the protection that the Duchess has provided. During this period he once again runs into Fulvia and learns of her father's passing. Fulvia is in a convent, but not free to come and go. He plots an escape with her, but time and again he fails to understand just how much others are able to learn about his planning. With the aid of another sister though, they make their escape and Odo intends to travel with Fulvia into Switzerland. Just before they make their escape, they are found by de Crucis who informs Odo that the Duke has died and that Odo is to be the next Duke. Odo is willing to give it up, but Fulvia reminds him of his obligation to his people and refuses to let Odo accompany her any further.

Book IV is titled "The Reward" and covers Odo's time as Duke of Pianura. He tries to push the agenda of the free-thinkers, pushed by his old friend Carlo Gamba and Fulvia Vivaldi, the woman that he loves. But he has been forced to marry the Duchess and play all the political games to deal with the church and the nobles, and it has cost him much popularity. Things come to a head around the constitution that Odo wants to give the people, but the other forces in society work to prevent that from happening.

This is a long and complex story, filled with historical and social information about Italy in the late 18th century. The explanations supporting the story ultimately detract from it overall, but it is still a remarkable piece of writing, and as Edith Wharton's first long novel it is definitely of interest.
