Book worth reading
By Leia Sulee
Quality writing and story taking place in the early 1600's. Old English style writing with Latin comments and adlibs by the characters interspersed with personal character introspective.

"I do not say there is no character as well drawn in Shakespeare [as D'Artagnan]. I do say there is none that I love so wholly."
--Robert Louis Stevenson

"The lasting and universal popularity of The Three Musketeers shows that Dumas, by artlessly expressing his own nature in the persons of his heroes, was responding to that craving for action, strength and generosity which is a fact in all periods and all places."

"Useful notes, compact serviceable text, affordable price."--Dorice Elliot, Johns Hopkins

From the Publisher
Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

Vanitas Vanitatum
By Jeffrey Leach
Many consider William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) a minor novelist who wrote in a time when George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Trollope ruled the roost of British literature. Out of all of his works, "Vanity Fair" is the most recognizable in literary circles, although Stanley Kubrick immortalized Thackeray's "Barry Lyndon" in a film of the same name. "Vanity Fair" appeared in serial form in 1847-48, a process of publishing used to great success by Charles Dickens. The introduction to this Everyman's Library edition, written by Catherine Peters, says that the title of the book came from John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress," an immensely popular work in circulation at the time.
"Vanity Fair" centers on the exploits of two British women, Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley, beginning roughly at the time of the Battle of Waterloo and ending at some time in the 1830's. The two women are polar opposites: Becky is a conniving, domineering, sometimes insensate woman who constantly attempts to secure a position in high society. Amelia is a rather plain, simple girl who trusts people too often and ends up getting her heart stomped on repeatedly. The two women are ostensibly friends, spending their youth together at a finishing school and occasionally running into each other throughout their lives. Thackeray often likes to place the two in opposition to one another: when Amelia falls into a crisis, Becky is moving in the highest circles of society. When Amelia comes into luck, Becky's fortunes plummet. This see-sawing action helps move the novel through a series of intricately detailed scenes showing off Thackeray's sense of humor, his caustic critiques of English society, and his insightful commentary into the human condition.
Arrayed around these two figures is a veritable constellation of major and minor characters, all with their own foibles that Thackeray exposes in minute detail. There is Joseph Sedley, Amelia's obese and selfish brother who nearly marries Becky in the beginning of the book. George Osborne appears through part of the book as Amelia's fiancée and eventual husband, a vain man with an eye for the ladies and a spendthrift attitude. George's friend William Dobbin also figures prominently in the story. Dobbin is an admirable man, marred by his inability to come to terms with the feelings he has for Amelia. Other characters appear and disappear rapidly, too many to outline here. It is sufficient to say that Thackeray does not worry about overburdening the reader with too many cast members, and with nearly 900 pages in the book, he definitely has the time to adequately describe numerous scenes and people.
I do not know much about literary tags, but I will say that Thackeray must certainly fall into the category of a realist writer. His goal with "Vanity Fair" was to write a story that went against the romantic hero/heroine novels of his day. The subtitle to this book, "A Novel Without a Hero," clearly outlines the author's intentions to oppose unrealistic, feel good literature that failed to properly reflect genuine life. In this respect, Thackeray succeeds admirably by creating characters that exhibit both good and bad traits during their lives. For example, Becky steals and schemes her way through life but performs an amazingly beautiful service for Amelia at the end of the book. Does this make Becky a heroine? Hardly, as Becky does not change her ways after this event. Thackeray constantly sets us up to see a heroic act, only to dash our hopes a few pages later.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the novel is Thackeray's acidulous wit. Everyone comes in for a drubbing here, from the aristocracy to the common man. Names often reflect the author's scorn: nobles carry such embarrassing monikers as Lord Binkie, Lady Bareacres, and Lord Steyne. Sharp is an effective name for Becky, exposing her character and incisive wit. "Vanity Fair" is full of backstabbing, lying, adultery, stealing, pride and general rowdiness, and no one is above these base behaviors.
A slight problem with the story concerns the numerous narrative digressions that wax philosophic about relationships, women and their roles in society, and bad behavior. These insertions do become taxing at times even though they often help move the story along. Thackeray wants to make sure you know what he is trying to accomplish; he wants you to see yourself and your friends and family in these character sketches.
A bigger problem for me concerned this particular edition of the story. There were no footnotes or endnotes in the Everyman's Library version to help explain the jargon or place names of Thackeray's England. While the author's use of language never approaches the level of Walter Scott's Scottish vernacular, to cite an extreme example, it is still a problem at times. I recommend picking up the Penguin Classics version of "Vanity Fair," since Penguin editions usually employ explanatory notes.
"Vanity Fair" is a long yet worthwhile read. The book is hardly unreadable, an unfair label often attached to this agreeable story. If you enjoy reading 18th century English literature, you must read "Vanity Fair."

This Is My Favorite Book (but that was not always the case)
By A Customer
This book is not for everyone (as the next two reviews clearly demonstrate). I first read Vanity Fair in junior high, and at the time I probably would have agreed with the comments of the next two reviews: Vanity Fair seemed slow and plodding, confusing and contradictory. When I recently reread Vanity Fair, I could scarcely believe that this brilliant, ironic, hilarious, and incisive romp was the same book as the dull tome I had remembered. In retrospect I realized why my perspective had changed: in junior high I had read the book superficially and found the plot and characters lacking enough excitement to hold my interest; now I realized that the most captivating action was taking place outside the plot in the interaction between the reader and the most important person in the novel: the narrator. I, like many readers, completely missed this deeper level of meaning the first time around. Thus, to recommend this novel to the unsophiscated, inexperienced reader (such as I had been) would be futile. It takes a keen sense of irony and certain degree of insight into the workings of life and literature to recognize the narrator's vital role and to appreciate this novel in its fullest sense. This book is not an easy read: it forces the reader to confront many difficult moral questions and provides no easy answers. But for those who can handle ambiguity and can detect subtle, yet "laugh out loud" funny humor Vanity Fair is not only a necessary read, but an enjoyable one.
(Note: Buy this edition of Vanity Fair. The illustrations which Thackery drew for this novel greatly enhance the text, and the Norton edition reproduces all of them. In addition, the criticisms which are included make for a thought-provoking read and may help clarify your opinion of the novel).

greed and more...
By marzipan
I first read this novel twenty-five years ago, and while I found it funny and excellent entertainment at that time, I didn't realize that it is also a very great book. Now I do.

Readers who've found the novel too long are, I suspect, not regular readers of Victorian novels, which were traditionally published in newspapers, bit by bit. They're always long--that's their distinction from modern novels. More than most however, Vanity Fair opens with a bang, and from the first page on through more than 800, I found it hard to put down.

Through the cast of characters we see for ourselves the pervasive greed and hypocrisy of the 19th century British Empire. Jos Sedley, the Ex-collecter of Bogley Walla, the unfortunate Rawdon Crawley, George Osborne and the immoral, resourceful Becky Sharpe are some of the most vivid characters in English writing. The narrator's voice is perfect--though hardly appealing. It's not sentimental. The "objectivity" of a journalist's timidly expressed irony feeds into the reader's need to feel smug -- so that when shocking moments come (and they sure do) we are stunned. The narrator's voice here is much more inventive than one realizes immediately. In this and many other ways Thackeray's story-telling isn't typical of Victorian novelists--Eliot or Dickens for example. In the works of those authors we always know just what moral position the narrator has. (I should mention that I also finished re-reading Middlemarch before re-reading Vanity Fair.) Comparing the grand stateliness of George Eliot with Thackeray's voice made me see just what a tricky work of art Vanity Fair is. But Thackeray, too, makes his story come to life. The description of the Battle of Waterloo is one of the most brilliant things I've ever read. It's hard to believe that he wasn't there.

In the edition I read I found that C.L.R. James, the left-wing Trinidadian author and historian--an author I admire and enjoy reading, began reading Vanity Fair at the age of eight, and re-read it regularly throughout his long life. He claims to have learned more about the minds of white colonial empire-builders from this original and epic work than any history he read. Interesting...

By Fernando Perez Peña

By Campos

While The Cathedral of the Sea moved me by teaching me about the past I come from, this book has brought many emotions about a land and culture I have always admired.

Loving architecture, I feel Spain was very fortunate to have had such an amazing influence of a culture that enriched us (Spaniards) in so many ways. This book takes its time, like Spaniards like to do, and allows you to savor the intricate life and sentiments of the characters the author has developed for us. Hopefully it will open our hearts to understand how history impacts all of us, as human beings, and be more aware of the realities we live in today and own some of the choices we make.

Thank you Mr. Falcones for your amazing dedication and for sharing your passion with us.

Bravo!

Memorial del convento (Contemporanea) (Spanish Edition), by José Saramago

Review
The last line of a Book Review written by Bob Edmonds appearing in the February 13, 2014 Edition of the "McCormick Messenger" states, "THE BLANKET HILL INSURGENCY is a reading experience that readers will long remember."

From the Author
The Blanket Hill Insurgency is a fictional accounting of a time in our history the Baby Boom Generation lived and (in their own way) struggled with the radical and rapid changes of society. As children, this generation lived in an environment of patriotism as it blossomed following the Second World War. Most possessed faith in the Lord, respect for elders and a belief the United States and its government was the best in the world. Fear of the spread of communism, remnant of the witch-hunts of Senator Joseph McCarthy and Russia launching Sputnik, united most in support of our government's involvement in the Korean Conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Southeast Asia.

By the end of the decade of the sixties, change plunged the nation into chaos. Young adults were faced with decisions fueled by events causing each to question their values. The advent of the pill led to a sexual revolution. Escalation in Vietnam, with daily live newscasts, raised doubt about our involvement... especially with so many men facing the military draft. Their trust in the establishment decayed.

Each made their choices. Some retained their childhood values and supported actions in Vietnam or enlisted in the military. Some became pacifists or activists against the government. Thousands were drafted or fled to Canada to avoid the draft. Others joined in radical and some-time violent activities seeking to destroy the establishment. As chaos reached a pinnacle, four students died as National Guardsmen fired into thousands of protesters on Blanket Hill at Kent State University.

Much more than a tragedy, The Blanket Hill Insurgency follows young adults on campus and in the military. They experience the joy of being in love and despondency of breaking up, good times with friends and challenges with antagonists, partying at student taverns and the struggle to maintain grades (to flunk out was a near guarantee to be drafted) and clashes with authority and parents.

I wish the reader the same enjoyment I had writing The Blanket Hill Insurgency.

The real story about what happened at Kent State University!
By Marjorie Appleby
I’m not a history enthusiast and lean toward fiction and fantasy as a way to escape so this was an interesting departure for me. It made me think of when President John F. Kennedy was shot. I can recall exactly what I was doing when the devastating news was broadcast over the school PA system. And I recall the news of the Kent State Massacre…on the radio as I drove home from my job. But I didn’t understand what really happened – until I read The Blanket Hill Insurgency.
As an emerging author and avid reader, I choose books based upon certain criteria. I want to be swept away to places I’ve never been to and entertained while learning something new. I didn’t know the real story of what happened that fateful day in May 1970.
Kent State University was located less than an hour from my house and it was devastating to think that something like that could happen so close to home! This single event brought the question most people had on their minds…should the United States even be in the Vietnam War.
Author Terry L. Wilson brings a new perspective to what took place at a juncture in our history, at a quiet campus, in the little town of Kent, Ohio. He starts by transporting the reader into the Vietnam jungle, and then slingshot us in and out of what transpires before and after the tragic event.
I now have a new understanding and appreciation of how this tragic event unfolded. As Mr. Wilson masterfully brings us along with him on this journey through life on a college campus, as well as a peek into Army life during the Vietnam War, he gives credence to this thought provoking and inspirational subject. His characters show extraordinary behavior along with a deep understanding of faith that encourages hope.
I recommend reading The Blanket Hill Insurgency in order to understand what really happened during this conflict. Mr. Wilson tackled this delicate subject nicely. Bravo!

Great book that captures campus life and the moral conflict of the Viet Nam war during the mid to late '60s
By L. R. Brown
In his book, The Blanket Hill Insurgency, the author Terry Wilson, weaves a story about post-World War II teens as they experience life around traditional family values and anticipate with excitement graduating from high school and stepping out on their own to challenge the world.

Wilson introduces the reader to Richard "Dick" Ames in the jungles of Viet Nam trying to stay alive. Through a series of flashbacks, the story of The Blanket Hill Insurgency unfolds.

Ames grew up poor, but he was hardworking and intelligent. His desire to pursue a degree in architect almost didn't happen when his father's business failed. Ames gave up his college money to help the family survive. A local businessman saw Ames' potential and funded his college expenses to Kent State. During his first year at KS, Ames experienced the emotions of many freshman; romance, love, sex, and conflict. Drugs, class demands, new friends and old high school rivals paint a picture of college life in the mid to late '60s. Wilson brings the Kent State campus to life through Ames and his friends.

In south east Asia, the Viet Nam war was ramping up and this brought great moral conflict to many students. The patriotic felt the war was justified to stop the spread of communism. More radically minded students felt the war was about large corporations reaping profits from the sales of goods and arms to the military. The radical's believed the universities across the nation were a major contributor to this war's effort via ROTC programs and the development of new weapons. They wanted these programs eliminated. Violence was one of the tools the radicals students employed to promote this agenda. The introduction of the military draft added fuel to their determination to eliminate the programs.

Ames and his friends were caught up in this sea of change while at Kent State and witnessed the dark side of the conflicts that developed. For those of us in college during this time, Wilson's story will definitely resonate and bring back memories filed away over the past 45-50 years. For those born after the '60s, it will give insight into the life that many of their parents experienced. I highly recommend this book.

It’s the quiet subtly of this book that makes it potent
By Susan Ward
In a very restrained, well written style this book brought back to me many things I haven’t thought of in years. In a thorough portrait of a group of friends attending Kent State in the 60s, we see the prior American culture first mingle with the emerging culture, the culture clash, the confusion over the world, and how truly random one’s destiny can be. Unlike too many authors, Terry Wilson Does Not over play a single card. Instead of rushing in and painting epic, romanticized tales of the 60s, he tells his tale simply and with great honesty. It is a story worth telling, worth reminding us all of, and a story that would have been diminished if told in any other way. The end surprised me, because I wanted to remain hopeful for the characters. Perhaps that is the greater message. That in all that happened during this period, there was great loss and we need be reminded of that. A worthy read I would highly recommend. Particularly to young adults.

About the Author
Alfred Edward Wooley Mason was born in 1865. He was educated at Dulwich College before going up to Oxford University. Once his formal education was completed, Mason went on to become an actor, which had been an ambition since schooldays. He began his writing career with historical fiction, but then moved into the arena of politics, becoming a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry in 1906. However, his love of writing stayed with him and Mason further developed his repertoire and style to incorporate detective fiction, introducing one of the earliest fictional detectives, Inspector Hanaud, the Gallic counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. His detective fiction contains material clues and spontaneity. Throughout the course of his life Mason produced over thirty titles. The most enduring work is 'The Four Feathers' which is the most filmed work of any writer in the 20th century, with seven versions in all. There have also been many other films and plays based on his novels, including the Hanaud series. A.E.W. Mason died in 1948.

Not one of his best
By colsin
This is fairly typical AEW Mason stuff- tragic heroine, stiff upper lip hero, etc. The writing is often over the top and flowery. Unlike his best stories, there is little suspense or action.

New Orleans Confidential: Lucien Caye Private Eye Stories, by O'Neil De Noux

Come prowl the lonely, sometimes violent streets of American's most exotic city, the city that care forgot, New Orleans, with a lone-wolf private-eye named Lucien Caye. Unlike most 40s PIs, Caye rarely drinks, doesn't smoke or wear a hat (it messes up his hair). He's six feet tall with wavy, dark brown hair and standard-issue Mediterranean-brown eyes, a sly smile and a clever mind that often gets him into trouble. Caye lives and works in the run-down New Orleans French Quarter of the late 1940s. He has a weakness for women, children and fellow World War II veterans, down on their luck. He knows how to make a decent living but often finds himself working pro-bono - in one case working to find a little girl's missing cat, in another searching for a boy's runaway father and in yet another, canvassing the Quarter for the child who wrote a note to Santa Claus, asking Santa to take him to live with the angels so his mother and father didn't have to buy food for him anymore. They don't have any money. Murder is often the name of the game and Caye sometimes leaves town in pursuit of the truth, usually aiding a pretty woman in need of help, in more ways than one. Unfortunately, the truth is often ugly, often dangerous and usually resides on the loneliest part of town.

Good collection of shorts.
By John A. Brissette
This is a collection of short stories. That said it is a little tough to rate/review as it is technically several different pieces in one collection. The stores are entertaining, move well, and the characters are fun if at times predictable. Having family from Louisiana and being a frequent visitor to New Orleans which is a cultural second home, I bought this book because of the setting. Nola is a perfect setting, exotic, old, devil may care and Denoux does it very very well. Only criticisms are his tendency to get too far into the erotica end of the spectrum for my taste and that because this is a collection of shorts you end up reading the repetitive character development lines over and over again in each story so it gets a bit redundant that the main doesn't wear hats and why, that he served in Europe in the war and where, etc. otherwise it's completely entertaining which is the point of this genre.

Woman Pleaser
By Lydia Xiao
I have to thank a Louisiana State Trooper for alerting me to this book, which has just about everything that'll please a woman reader like me.

If you're in a maternal mood, then private detective Lucien Caye is very good with kids, working cases for them pro-bono. If you're in a frisky mood, then this is definitely your kind of man. Lucien is a turn-on as he helps women with their problems in more ways than one. If you're in the mood for a good detective story, check out "Hard Rain," a genuine murder mystery. If you're in the mood for a little romance, there's "Expect Consequences."

I'm sure men will see Lucien Caye as a man's man, but I really think he's a woman's man. These stories seem to have everything: mystery, intrigue, sex, violence, love, even swamp monsters.

It is a great book about New Orleans.
