Adams himself drew heavily from his own exciting life to fill his heroic and exciting western adventures. He not only wrote tales that were inspiring and epic visions of the old west, he lived them himself. This was one of his major works, and is truly just as inspirational today as they were when first written. The cowboy, cattle, villains, Indians, the frontier life, violence and friendship, were all hallmarks of his stories. Go back to those wonderful days with this great Adams story.

Anything you want to know about starting a Cattle ranch and delivering the beeves to market---this is the story. Starts off with two young boys alone in western Kansas and their building a herd along the cattle drive trail from Texas to the north But then it seems to get long and drawn out about how they bring those beeves to market and selling them etc. Very informative of how it was done at that time.

I kept waiting for the gun slinger to make the scene which shows how habituated I've become to modern westerns. Due to the year this was written, I have a suspicion this is much more descriptive of that era than most of our present-day westerns. I really enjoyed the insights into the daily lives of those living on the frontier. This is much more indicative of the people who made it on their own hard work and the danger and privation they faced as opposed to modern people who "make it" by sitting in an office and investing other people's money. That was the real American dream, not inheriting millions.

Segunda parte de la trilogía "The Century", a traves de los personajes que dan vida a los acontecimientos de cambiaron el curso de la humanidad el autor nos acerca a la ascención de los nazis al poder en 1933, la Guerra Civil Española de 1936-1939, la Segunda Guerra Mundial de 1939-1945 y a los primeros años de la Guerra Fría con todas sus consecuencias para los seres humanos que de una forma u otra les tocó padecerlas. Una magistral obra que a pesar de que algunos diálogos resultan demasiado rápidos y facilones de digerir el autor capta la atención del lector y no desluce para nada en la calidad de la obra. Esperemos que la tercera parte de la trilogía sea igual de intensa, entretenida, instructiva e interesante que las dos anteriores.

One of the best novels ever read. Con citas históricas novelado amenamente, una novela que vale la pena leer. Espero con ansias el 3 tomo de la trilogía. Descripción de personajes coherente, algunas veces se enreda en el transcurso de la historia, pero al principio se especifican quiene son. No es necesario ser historiador para entender ese invierno que atravesó el mundo y que no debemos atravesar nunca más. NEVER AGAIN!!!

This book provides a view of early settlement after the war between the states and the struggle to settle into adulthood. It provides a love story of two people who met as
children and waited to become adults to reunite after the war. It takes you into the minds of the open prairie filled with aggressive indians still at war with the white man while struggling to maintain their independence in a world where white men are encroaching on their lives.
This book kept my attention easily. I look forward to the next written publication.

I was fortunate enough to read a draft, and I could not put it down. It was an outstanding fiction story. But what makes fiction good is great research. As a military historian, with a secondary specialty in 19th Century US Army, Jerry Orange did his research, which makes the book more enjoyeable and more believable. A wonderful series, new to me, which I now want to follow.

I really enjoyed this mystery set in London somewhere between 1924 and 1925, I couldn't tell exactly and the author never gave a definite date. This is the first novel I've read by Dolores Gordon-Smith and even though it appears to be the eighth of the series I had no problems easily picking up the relationship between the main characters. Chief Inspector William Rackham of Scotland Yard and his writer friend, Major Jack Haldean, attend an exhibition of church art and what happens in the street afterward sends all the parties on a complicated journey reaching far into the past to uncover secrets leading to murder. Betty Wingate isn't believed later when she reports finding a dead body in the cottage being rented by Signora Bianchi. Since there is no evidence of murder when the police investigate most people feel Betty was just having a bad dream. She convinces Bill Rackham and Jack Haldean to come to Wimbrell Heath in Surrey to investigate and prove that she wasn't delusional and there really was a body in the sitting room.

The artwork on the cover of this novel will give you the perfect clue as to the atmosphere you can expect to encounter. Ms. Gordon-Smith did a wonderful job of placing me firmly within her chosen time period using both description and dialogue. I enjoyed the close friend style of relationship between Bill and Jack with each of them having particular strengths necessary to solving the many mysteries they encountered in this case. Jack Haldean is the more intellectual of the two and carries the primary responsibility for interpreting the clues presented which lead to solving the case. The mystery plot was very well done with me wondering all the way through what the eventual solution would be. I was surprised at the major revelation; that was well and smoothly done without alerting me to that possibility before the book was finished. I will definitely have to begin collecting the other novels in this series. It is so very nice to find an author new to me in a genre I especially enjoy so that I look forward to reading more of their work.

This is a period mystery in the world of post WWI England in the 20s. The characters actually seem to be aware of working to make a living, unlike many mysteries of this time where the "young things" club, drink and lounge while chatting about to solve a crime.
A mystery writer, Jack, and a Scotland Yard inspector, Bill, are good friends who work together well while trying to solve a mystery involving missing bodies and people who really aren't who you think they are. The clues spring up throughout the story as the plot gets thicker and more confusing. Altogether, this was a fine escape into another world where the people are enough different to be interesting yet enough the same under the skin as to understand motivations and feelings.
If you haven't read the other books in the series, you shouldn't have a problem. This stands on its' own, although I am eager for the next book to come along.

Brilliant British mystery!!!

Dolores does it again!!! And so does Jack ... When I read one of Dolores's books I always feel like I've just stepped into Masterpiece Mystery on PBS. If you love British mysteries, then follow Jack Haldean through any one of his stories. Dolores always selects wonderful backdrops for her books and then weaves a truly great tale in that glamorous 20's style. In this story, Jack and his Chief Inspector friend Bill Rackham are reluctantly thrown into the art world when a dead body turns up missing. But leave it to Jack and Chief Inspector Rackham to follow the twists and turns and take us on a whirlwind tour complete with a cast of characters Agatha Christie would be proud of. As they say across the pond - "Brilliant".

Could not put it down!

Ms McNicol has done it again. From first page to the last, you are there, spellbound by the twists and turns in the story that she has to tell. Pure magic! The story picks up where Rachel Wicks leaves off, but even if you haven't read the first book, this book stands alone to tell the story. Though you will want to read the first book! Nothing predictable, nothing for sure and the end a delight! Well done. I have only one hope... the writer writes another book soon!

Adventure and Romance Galore - Make a Movie of This, Someone

I have set myself to reading all of the H. Rider Haggard novels, and my library had a 1903 (!) edition of this book. Geez, it is AWESOME! I love early Christianity books like _Ben Hur_ and _Quo Vadis_; this book is up in their league.

That having been said, _Pearl Maiden_ spends very little time trying to assure the reader that Christianity is the best way, the only way, and that every other culture and faith that has come before it is misguided at best and infernal at worst. That's one of the things I really admire about Haggard, the more so as I read more of his books: for a man of his time, he is remarkably open-minded.

So, what's the book about? The twisting, turning plot follows the adventures of Miriam (the "Pearl Maiden" of the book's title), an orphan whose Christian mother puts the baby into the care of a loyal servant woman. Miriam grows up in an adoring colony of Essenes, who educate her and teach her a trade (sculpting) but who, because of the dictates of their order, must send her forth into the world. She goes to live with her grandfather, a powerful Jewish merchant who hates the Roman rule and takes part in the defense of Jerusalem from Titus' forces.

Miriam, whose grandfather has allowed her to retain her Christian faith, finds herself in a conflict, for she has fallen in love with Marcus, a Roman officer. To further complicate the plot, she has been raised with Caleb, a young Jewish boy, who loves her and no other.

Well, I won't divulge any more of the the plot; you will want to savour it for yourself. It's a nice, fat book (my edition is over 500 pages), that will satisfy anyone who enjoys an action-packed historical yarn. I was up until one this morning finishing it off.

How can some one edit, revise, change dialogue, names and scenes and claim it is still the original? Kou readily admits to this atrocities in regards to Haggard's work. Haggard wrote brilliantly and Kou has completely mutilated Haggard's story.

What Kou has done is equivalent to rewriting Shakespeare's Othello as a Dick & Jane Bible Primer and claiming it is as Shakespeare's original work.

Find an unedited original and avoid this edition.

I read many of H. Rider Haggard's books as a child; I adored them, and they imprinted themselves indelibly upon my tastes in reading material. The fact that I read them beginning at the age of nine should make it clear that they are not hopelessly difficult and in need of revision and dumbing down for an uneducated public. Any adult of normal intelligence should have no difficulty at all in reading, understanding and enjoying these books. If you come across an occasional word or reference that you don't know, that's what dictionaries and encyclopedias are for.

The hatchet job that's been done on this book is unforgivable. It disgusts me to think that people will read this and never know what they've missed. The "editor" doesn't deserve the name. If bad and unnecessary editing were a crime, this clown would go to the electric chair. In case you can't tell yet, I think Christopher D. Kou and Christian Liberty Press are nothing more than vandals. And if you haven't noticed, I'm angry, and so I offer the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, as written, followed by a guess at how Kou and Company would render them:

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Edited and "Improved" for Modern Usage a la Kou and Christian Liberty Press:

Hey, did you notice it wasn't night any more?
And did you look at the flag like before you went to bed?
Stripes and stuff?
People were fighting but we watched it from the top of a hill or wall or something
It was red from bombs so we could kind of see anyway
I wonder if it's still around. The End.

There now. Wasn't that ever so much better?
